Apparently my most recent book review in the USA Today made a few PR people unhappy, judging from the displeased blog posts in which my name was non-favorably mentioned. The book, which was written by a pair of PR guys, offers an unadorned look at the industry, and I guess much of the industry is used to casting things in the most positive light, so this is like unusual bad meta-PR for them.

I answered a few angry emails this morning* -- including one from a creationist who was mad about my dinosaur column in the Transcript -- so it's been a banner month for people objecting to my writing.

Perhaps this is why I was unmotivated to do any of the work I was supposed to this afternoon. Instead, I spent all day writing a poem. And a non-rhyming poem at that. Odd, I know. But there was a local poetry slam tonight, the first in a while after they died out long ago. So even though it meant skipping gaming group, I wanted to go, and I wanted to have a brand new written poem to read (in addition to my usual freestyling).

I wasn't sure how the poem would go over, but the audience loved it, which was very gratifying. I know I'm in a very small pond, but winning poetry slams is fun. It was especially nice to feel like the applause tonight wasn't just "Ooh, he's making it up right now!" but that I'd taken all day to write something and that my effort was worth it because the words resonated with people.

Which, I guess in the end, is what I'm supposed to do after all.

* Okay, technically 1pm.
