How to curse yourself
Oct. 11th, 2008 04:33 pmThe other day, I noticed that my Verizon bill was slightly higher for Internet than I'd remembered, so I called up and asked about it. Apparently, I used to be on a one-year contract, but was switched to a slightly higher monthly rate. The guy said, "Honestly, for $2 a month, it's not worth making the commitment." But I'm frugal, so I said, "Sign me up! I can't imagine I won't be using the Internet all year, ha ha."
Literally, within two minutes of that call, our Internet connection went down. For hours. We called back, and apparently, Verizon was having an outage for the entire area. Not Pleased. Late that night, the Internet was finally restored, but by then I'd noticed something else interesting: My computer had decided to start randomly shutting itself down. We took it to a local repair shop yesterday (Total Access Computers -- good service) and apparently the power source needed replacing. (
the_star_fish had correctly guessed this was the problem earlier.)
Anyway, now I'm back on the Internet, and more board games arrived today, and I'm off to hear a lecture about JRR Tolkein in two hours. I think this weekend will turn out okay after all.
Also, thanks again to everyone who commented on my previous post. Oddly (or perhaps, not oddly) I've found myself commenting more since posting that, perhaps because such in-post conversation reinforces my mental idea that the Internet has my friends on it and I should communicate with them. This is contrary to my usual glean, namely that the Internet is a silly place where people post things, but really, it's for vaguely keeping friends aware of each other so future in-person reunions can waste less time with laundry-list catch-ups.
