Slam Report
Feb. 8th, 2007 03:50 pmWell, the poetry slams at Cafe Latino ended with a whimper, not a bang. Not enough people showed up last night for a slam proper, so we just had an open mic. On the bright side, that meant I could do even more random crap than usual. My first poem was the usual improv with suggestions from audience, but after getting "dog" and "Greenpeace", I ended up on a rant about animal rights and animal welfare before ending with "sock puppets". For my second poem, I gave a dramatic recitation of my best nerdcore rap, Legend of Ham-STAR. In spite of the lack of backbeats or hamster voice, people seemed to appreciate it.
For my last poem, I got up and announced that I would do an impromptu sonnet on whatever topic the audience called out. At this point, I should mention, I was greatful to have an audience including a whole table of people whom I had convinced to come, consisting of
the_star_fish,
katskill, M., and S., who is a bit of a punk. Unfortunately, he's also a somewhat intellectual punk, and took the opportunity to yell out "Fermat's Last Theorem!"
In spite of my mathematical renown in highschool, I must admit that my knowledge of Fermat's Last Theorem is somewhat limited. Sure, when I looked it up online afterwards it seemed familiar, but at the time I couldn't think of it. Consequently, my sonnet was more about Fermat turning in his grave as other people solve his theorem than it was about the theorem itself. But hey, it was in iambic pentameter and proper sonnet rhyme scheme, so I don't feel too bad. Besides, I figure most of the audience probably weren't big Fermat buffs anyway.
Next slam looks to be the Friday the 23rd of this month, on Spring Street.
