Bizarre confluence

Last night, while listening to an old episode of This American Life, I was reading an article on how to know when to concede a Magic game. And in the middle of the article, the episode I was listening to moved to a story about a guy with a terminal disease who had decided not to undergo treatment after analyzing his chances for survival.
